Root Canals
Endodontic treatment, commonly known as root canal treatment, is used when the pulp (nerve) of the tooth becomes infected. This infection can be caused by decay, deep large fillings, tooth fracture or accidents which result in the death of the pulp tissue. Such infections often produce painful abscesses, while others may occur without any signs or symptoms until found in routine examinations.
Modern endodontic treatment is painless and usually completed in a single appointment. The purpose of the treatment is to clean out dead pulp tissue and fill the canal with material preventing bacteria from lodging in the empty canal and re-infecting the tooth.
The treated tooth remains in its place in the mouth. This preserves the natural dental arch. Losing a tooth in the dental arch allows the adjacent teeth to tip into the space disrupting the contact between teeth. Loss of the integrity of the arch increases the chances of decay and gum disease. To restore the arch integrity requires more costly treatment. See replacement of missing teeth by implants, bridges or dentures (partial).
